Handing Out Permissions

Let moderators into the dashboard without handing them the whole Discord server.

The problem

For this purpose Discord knows only one single permission: Server verwalten (manage server). Anyone who has it may rename the server, delete channels, move roles and revoke invitations. Anyone who does not have it cannot get into the dashboard at all.

On Discord there is nothing in between. Someone who is only meant to answer tickets or look into the log would have to be given all the rest as well — or you do it yourself.

The solution

In the dashboard under Zugänge (access) you give individual people access without changing anything about the Discord permissions. There are three things you set in doing so:

The level

  • Moderation — may only open the modules you tick. Nothing else.
  • Verwaltung (administration) — may configure all modules.

The modules

At the moderation level you tick what the person may open. Suggested are Moderation, Logbuch (the server log), Tickets, Automod and Raidschutz (raid protection) — that is, what you actually moderate with. You can add or remove any other module.

Only modules your server actually has are offered. A module released for someone that is not part of the subscription would be a link to a lock screen.

The time limit

24 hours, 7 days, 30 days or unlimited. Access with a time limit ends by itself — you do not have to remember anything and do not have to tidy anything up.

That is the actual point of this page. Access granted "just for this evening" that nobody withdraws again is, six months later, access nobody knows about any more. That is why the shortest limit comes first.

How it works

  1. In the dashboard, click Zugänge at the top.
  2. Enter the Discord-User-ID (Discord user ID). You find it like this: in Discord, switch on Einstellungen → Erweitert → Entwicklermodus (settings → advanced → developer mode), then right-click on the name → ID kopieren (copy ID). It is a long number, not a name.
  3. Choose the time limit, choose the level, and at the moderation level tick the modules.
  4. Zugang vergeben (grant access).

The person then sees the server under "Für dich freigeschaltet" (released for you) in their server list — they only have to sign in with Discord once. You do not have to send them a link.

What handed-out access may never do

Two things always stay with the server leadership, regardless of the level:

  • Subscription and invoices. There is a payment obligation attached to those. That belongs to whoever pays.
  • This page itself. If access could grant further access, you would eventually be looking at a list you did not create.

Anyone who is only given access to certain modules also sees only those — in the menu at the top and in the module list. Blocked pages do not appear at all, rather than standing around greyed out.

Withdrawing

One click on the waste bin next to the entry and the access is gone immediately — even if the time limit is still running. The entry itself is not deleted but marked as revoked: otherwise the question would come up later as to whether someone ever had access at all, and nobody would be able to answer it.

Every grant and every withdrawal appears in your server's Protokoll (log), with the time and with whoever did it.

Common questions

Does the person have to know the bot or do anything beforehand? No. You only need their user ID. After that they have to sign in on the website with Discord once — nothing more.

Does this change anything about their permissions on Discord? No, nothing at all. The access applies to the dashboard only.

What happens if I give the same person access a second time? The new one replaces the old one. "Another 7 days" is therefore an extension and not a second entry.

And if my subscription expires? Then handed-out access only sees the free modules as well — it can never have more than the server itself has.
