Sticky Notes

A message that stays at the bottom of the channel — for rules, support notices and everything else that otherwise drifts upwards.

In a busy channel a pinned message is invisible after ten minutes: pins have to be opened first, and nobody does that. A sticky note solves it differently — the bot keeps writing it anew at the end, so that it sits where people are looking anyway.

Elsewhere this is called a sticky message.

/haftnotiz setzen text:Bitte zuerst die angepinnte FAQ lesen.

Done. From now on the note hangs in this channel.

When it moves down

Two rules, and the one that applies first wins:

Rule Default Meaning
Nach Nachrichten (after messages) 5 Once five people have written, it moves down
Nach Sekunden (after seconds) 120 Or when two minutes have passed

Both together, because one alone is not enough. In a quiet channel the counting rule would never fire and the note would disappear after the first question. In a loud channel the time rule would fire non-stop.

You change both per channel:

/haftnotiz setzen text:... nach_nachrichten:10 nach_sekunden:300

The three-second lock

There are always at least three seconds between two copies — even if twenty people are writing at the same moment. Without that lock the bot would run in circles and Discord would throttle it for it. You cannot switch it off, and that is deliberate.

A channel that has fallen asleep is left in peace

If nobody has written anything since the last copy, nothing happens — even if the time is long up. The note is still right at the bottom, after all. A bot that writes the same rule into an empty channel every hour at night gets switched off, not read.

It never pings

You can write @Moderator or @everyone into the text — nobody is notified, with not a single copy. That is the reason you can use something like this at all: a note that pings half the server twenty times a day would be gone again after one day.

One per channel

The bot does not allow more. Two sticky notes in the same channel would chase each other downwards, endlessly. If you set a second one in a channel, it replaces the first.

Templates

If you have a note that you need in several channels:

/haftnotiz merken name:support-hinweis
/haftnotiz vorlage name:support-hinweis kanal:#hilfe

Everything is saved — text, heading, colour and the rhythm.

Appearance

By default the note is an embed with a colour stripe at the edge; that sets it apart from the stream of messages. Under /haftnotiz setup you switch to a normal message or change the colour. A heading exists only in the embed:

/haftnotiz setzen titel:Bevor du fragst text:...

For several lines you write \n:

/haftnotiz setzen text:Zeile eins\nZeile zwei

What the bot needs to be able to do

  • Nachrichten senden (send messages) and Links einbetten (embed links) in the channel concerned
  • Nachrichten verwalten (manage messages), to clear the old copy away

If that last permission is missing, every old copy stays and the channel fills up. You can switch the clearing up off under /haftnotiz setup, but then you should also set the rhythm considerably slower.

What can go wrong

The note does not move down. First check whether the module is switched on — under /haftnotiz setup or in the dashboard. A text that has been set is not enough on its own.

It appears several times in the channel. The bot is missing the "Nachrichten verwalten" permission, or the old copy is older than 14 days; no bot may delete messages that old. Tidy up by hand once, after that it runs.

After a restart it moves down one extra time. The counter lives in memory and starts at zero after a restart. That is intended: counting in the database would cost one write operation for every single message on every server.

Commands

Command What it does
/haftnotiz setup Switch the module on, colour, default rhythm
/haftnotiz setzen Attach a note or overwrite it
/haftnotiz liste All sticky notes of the server
/haftnotiz entfernen Take a channel's note down
/haftnotiz merken Save this channel's note as a template
/haftnotiz vorlage Hang a template in a channel

All commands are restricted to the Nachrichten verwalten permission.

Buttons and an image

/sticky buttons opens a window with one line per button:

To the wiki | https://fishbot.gg/wiki
Apply | https://fishbot.gg/form

Label, vertical bar, address. Throw in just a link and you still get a button — the label is then taken from the address. Discord allows five buttons, no more. Emptying the field means: buttons gone.

With buttons the note is built as a card. A classic embed cannot carry buttons inside its frame — they would sit below it and look tacked on. Without buttons everything stays as it was; an existing sticky note does not change by itself.

An image is set when creating the note with image: — an address starting with https://. Both survive a later /sticky set: changing only the text costs you neither your buttons nor your image. And /sticky save carries both into the template.
