Birthdays

Members enter their birthday, the bot sends congratulations automatically.

Every member enters their own birthday:

/geburtstag setzen tag:14 monat:3

The year is optional. Anyone who gives it can have their age shown — anyone who does not still gets their congratulations. This separation is deliberate: a birthday without a year gives away nothing somebody does not want to disclose.

Entering it for someone else

That is possible, but it is switched off until you switch it on:

/geburtstag setzen tag:14 monat:3 mitglied:@Anna

Who may do this you set under /geburtstag setup → Wer darf eintragen (who may enter birthdays). Empty means: nobody except the server management. The same applies to /geburtstag entfernen mitglied:@Anna.

Two things stay fixed while doing so:

  • Your own entry stays in your own hands. Anyone who does not agree with the date overwrites it themselves or deletes it with /geburtstag entfernen — without asking anyone. (Overwriting is off once the switch below is on; deleting always stays possible.)
  • The year stays optional. For other people, better to enter only the day and month. The age is the detail that really belongs to someone.

Handing the list to the management entirely

Some servers do not want everyone entering their own at all — a date of birth is personal information, and a wrong one somebody logged as a joke is still there a year later. That is what the Auch den eigenen nur durch diese Rollen switch (their own only through these roles as well) is for.

With it on, only people in the role list or with “Manage Server” may enter anything — their own birthday included. Anyone who tries anyway gets a sentence telling them who to ask, rather than a bare refusal.

Everyone may delete their own entry — always. Even with the switch on. Personal information you cannot get rid of is information nobody puts on file twice.

Setting it up

/geburtstag setup. One entry is mandatory: the Kanal (channel) in which congratulations are given. Without it, nothing happens.

On top of that there are:

  • Diese Rollen dürfen Geburtstage eintragen — other people's too; empty means nobody except the management
  • Auch den eigenen nur durch diese Rollen — off means self-service, on means the management keeps the list
  • Uhrzeit (time) — a full hour in German time, 9 am by default
  • Text — {user} becomes the mention, {age} the age
  • Geburtstagsrolle (birthday role) — handed out in the morning and taken away again the next day
  • Alter anzeigen (show age) — only takes effect for people who have voluntarily stored a year
  • Mehrere zusammenfassen (combine several) — see below, on by default

Several birthdays on the same day

If three people have their birthday on one day, the bot does not write the same thing three times in a row but once:

🎉 Alles Gute zum Geburtstag, @Anna, @Ben und @Chris!

Your own text is preserved in doing so — {user} simply becomes a list instead of a single mention. Everyone is still mentioned.

The age is dropped in the combined message, even if the display is switched on: with three names and one number, nobody would know who it belongs to.

If you would rather have a separate message for each person, switch Mehrere zusammenfassen off under /geburtstag setup.

How reliable this is

The bot checks every 15 minutes and sends congratulations at the configured full hour. There is exactly one set of congratulations per person and year, even if the bot restarts several times in between. Anyone who has left the server gets nothing — their entry does stay in place, though, in case they come back.

The birthday role is not taken away again via a second schedule but checked on every run: anyone carrying the role without having their birthday today loses it. That is robust against restarts, missed runs and roles handed out by hand.

29 February is accepted as a date. In years without that day the congratulations are skipped — that is more honest than moving them to another day.
